🦒 Overtaken by a giraffe

Hope you’re well!

I’m on site this rainy Friday morning, looking out of the window and hoping it will brighten up, when one of our regular fishermen, Matthew, calls in to show me a photo of a fish he’s just caught, a very nice 26lb common carp named Charlie.

I hadn’t seen Matthew in around a month, so when he asked what I’d been up to, I told him I’d been quite busy outside of work and showed him a few photos.

Then it occurred to me: I haven’t written an email in a good few weeks, so here we go…

Top of the list, and the thing I’m most proud of, is completing the Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday.

I’d done some training leading up to it, but nowhere near enough.

However, the conditions were perfect, the support from the crowd was unbelievable, I had my music playlist ready, and I was determined to keep running until I crossed the line…

The first 30 minutes were quite enjoyable, and I clocked a respectable 27 minutes for each of my first two 5ks.

But after the 10km mark, not even halfway, the pain set in. My legs felt heavy, and everyone I’d passed up until that point was now passing me back…

The remainder of the run was hard. A real lesson in perseverance!

At the 10-mile mark, I saw Alice and Arthur cheering me on, and that helped re-energise me and get me through the last few miles.

Then, with the finish line in sight, I dug deep and gave it my all…

Only to be overtaken by a giant giraffe on the finish line!!

LOL.

2 hours and 10 minutes was my time.

Mrs. Y finished in 1 hour 51 minutes, despite a knee injury halfway through.

It took me about three days for my legs to feel normal again!

Other than the run, it’s been birthday season…

First up was Mrs. Y’s birthday on 28th September.

We had a lovely walk around Scorton — photo below.

The weather was ideal and the dogs loved it. Pip did well for her age, especially with our guide dog pup trying to play with her non-stop.

After the walk, we drove over to a pub called the Inn at Whitewell. Delicious pies, a cheeky pint, and a brilliant day.

Then, three days later, it was my little girl Alice’s 10th birthday!

Where does the time go?!

Sadly — for us — she was away on a school trip for her birthday, so we didn’t get to see her on the day 🙁

She had the best time on her trip to an activity centre called Tower Wood in the Lake District.

The thing she wanted most for her birthday was a computer and a desk.

Which I thought was a reasonable ask, seeing as she’ll need one for her schoolwork anyhow.

So I ordered and collected the IKEA flat-pack desk and got to work…

Around six hours later, at about midnight, I finally finished.

Flat-pack furniture and running are not my natural strong points!

I’ve also sponsored Arthur’s football team, Kirkham Juniors, who are currently unbeaten in their first five matches! Well done, Arthur and the team.

Then on Tuesday night, we met Dom Joly. This name may not mean much to those under 30, but what a top guy he was!

I’d highly recommend his Trigger Happy TV 25th anniversary show if it’s on near you.

Anyhow, I’ve taken enough of your time for today.

Thank you, as always, for reading.

All my very best,

Alex – Camp Site Manager (& looking forward to seeing my mum, who’s up this weekend!)
